Dei “Sancta Catharina” Toscana Rosso IGT '17

The Dei family produced their first wines from their estate in the heart of the historic appellation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1985. Since 1991, it has been run by Caterina Dei, and in this time the estate has become one of the leaders in the region, producing lush, perfumed, fruit-driven wines that are exquisite expressions of the local Prugnolo clone of Sangiovese.

The vineyards, on the slopes below the picturesque town of Montepulciano, extend over 60 hectares and are divided between the crus of Martiena, Bossona, La Piaggia, La Ciarliana, and Cervognano. The Vino Nobile Riserva Bossona, which comes entirely from the eponymous cru, is considered one of the best expressions of the Montepulciano terroir.  All it takes is a taste of these wines to know that they are the epitome of quality for the region. (Background info from the importer Skurnik)

“Sancta Catharina” is composed of 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, from 20-year-old vines that are cultivated organically. The vineyards are between 300 and 350 meters above sea level. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the grapes macerate for about 28 days in stainless steel vats. The wine is matured in Allier French oak barriques for 18 months, then in bottle for one year before releas. Approximately 165 cases are produced annually.

“The 2017 Sancta Catharina seduces the senses with a bouquet that mixes plum sauce with black cherries, grilled herbs and cocoa hints. This is undeniably elegant in feel, with masses of dark red fruits and sweet spices contrasted by saline minerals and a coating of fine-grained tannins that saturate deeply with each sip. The 2017 finishes structured, youthfully chewy and with incredible length, leaving mint, licorice and clove notes lingering for up to a minute. The balance achieved here is exceptional, especially considering the warm and dry conditions of the vintage. The Sancta Catharina will require cellaring to come fully into focus, but it will be worth the wait. This is a blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot , 30% Sangiovese, and 10% Petit Verdot. 94+ Points, Drinking Window - 2025-2032” (Vinous)
